The words we use for aging, and why they matter
Say the word in a whisper and you have already decided it is shameful. The words come first, and the confidence follows.
Watch how a product like this gets sold. Plain packaging. Hushed tones at the counter. A word said quietly, if at all. The message underneath is hard to miss. This is something to be embarrassed about.
Shame is taught, not natural
There is nothing shameful about a body that has done eight decades of living. The shame is something we add, in the language, in the packaging, in the aisle it is hidden in.
Better words, better care
When we treat aging as normal, because it is, the whole experience changes. Families buy without flinching. Older people ask for what they need without apologising. Care becomes just care.
That is the small, stubborn belief behind everything we make. Growing older is not something to hide. It is something to live through fully, as yourself.
