A caregiver's short guide to skin and comfort

Golden Years · 28 July 2026

The people doing the caring rarely get a manual. Here is the short version that protects skin, comfort and confidence.

If you are looking after a parent or a patient, you learn most of this the hard way. Here is the short version.

Change on time, not on schedule

A fixed clock helps, but comfort and skin come first. A fuller product changed a little early beats a stretched one changed late.

Clean gently, dry fully

Soft wipes and a pat dry, not a rub, protect the skin barrier. Moisture left behind is what causes most irritation.

Let the skin breathe

A short break between changes, where practical, does more for skin health than any cream. Choose breathable products for anyone wearing them for long stretches.

Keep it ordinary

Narrate what you are doing, keep the person covered, keep your tone matter of fact. The physical care and the emotional care are the same job.
